Bluebird Opening Sale

Bluebird is a clothing venture started by two young P-town locals, and is aimed at young and old with styles that will suit both. You can think about them as an up-cycling fashion brand, where they take old clothes nobody wants anymore and fix them up and add small modern details which then makes each piece very unique. Their prices are also very reasonable with the items ranging from R50 all the way to R350 for the most expensive pieces. Bluebird is a very young brand and tomorrow is their very first sale!!
The sale is taking place on the 2 June 2012 at number 4 Lynnwood Gardens, 11 The Ring Street, Lynnwood, Pretoria. This will be an event where anyone can come view and purchase Bluebird items. They will have a variety of vintage clothing, handbags and accessories for both men and women.
The doors open at 11:00 and the sale will run until 14:00. There will be wine and juice available, with bottomless wine going for R10 a glass!! What a deal!!! As they are a very young brand, it will be cash only. There will also be very safe parking provided.
For more info, visit Blubird's Facebook and event page.

Frikkie Cool Creative: Elzanne LOuw

This weeks chosen Frikkie Cool Creative is one of our good friends, Elzanne Louw. A Pretoria local who now applies her trade in Cape Town. Elzanne runs her own clothing and accessory label from her studio in the mother city, called LO.
Elzanne started out in the big world by studying photography at T.U.T and completed her diploma in 2006. It was while studying that she fell in love with fashion photography. "To be honest I always spent more time on putting together outfits and making crazy props for shoots than I ever spent on taking and editing pictures."   When the opportunity presented itself  for her to study a second time, she grabbed it with both hands and begun studying fashion at U.J. Her intention was to get into the fashion magazine world. During her time at U.J, she became fascinated by pattern making and tailoring. It was somewhere between her compelling urge to make things by hand, her pattern classes and her part time job at Superella that the bug had bitten and the realization was made - "Hey, I can be a Fashion Designer! Why the Frik not?"
It all turned out to be a lot of hard work, but that is exactly what she did. Elzanne moved down to Cape Town at the end of 2010.   "By Jan 2011, with a lot of love and support from some amazing friends and family Lo was born."   The name LO is derived from Elzannes surname, LOuw.   "I like this little connection, it makes me feel close to my work and like it connects to my heritage."
LO primarily produces ladies clothing and accessories, everything is produced locally and designed by Elzanne personally. All the materials are locally sourced while she personally does all the patterns. All of LO's ranges are always limited which makes LO a very exclusive and must have brand! For example, the winter coats and jackets are both based on very classic shapes, they are beautifully hand made from fine quality materials in the rich colors of the season, which is a Navy and a deep Rust colour.
LO is targeted towards women of all ages who have an appreciation for classic lines and shapes combined with quality in textile and quirky details. Comfort and fit are also top priority!

"I am often inspired by craft, vintage trims and buttons ,textile, print, colour, Art and Photography. These days my photographic expressions are limited to my Instagram addiction which is actually a great source of inspiration."

For winter this year, LO features a limited range of hand knitted gloves and neck-warmers as well as a selection of fabulous layered skirts and dresses, long sleeve blouses and for those in between season days, LO has some easy to layer Sailor dresses and short sleeve shirts.
If you are in the Gauteng region, be sure to check out LO at the Neighbourgoods market in Braamfontein every Saturday morning. If you are in the Cape Town area you can catch LO this Saturday, 2 June, at The Treasury Market in Stellenbosch or you can now buy LO clothing online at Hello Pretty. You can also check out her website and Facebook page for more info!! We here at Frikke Awesome find everything LO does to be LOvely and beFRIK, and a must have fashion item in any ones wardrobe!!
Keep an eye out on the blog and the Facebook page for an awesome COMPETITION where you can win yourself a LO Clothing voucher. Details to follow.

Honey Badger - Bistro

So there's this new spot in town that we think is preeeety kewl!! It's called Honey Badger Bistro, and is situated on the corner of Hilda and Pretorius street. It's got that street cafe vibe with the classic Snor Baai feel to it, which makes it ideal for one to sit there all day and relax...
Honey Badger was started by Cecilia Theron du Preez and Felicity Steenkamp, and from what we have experienced visiting Honey Badger is that they did a Frikkie Awesome job!! The bistro is very basic but it works so well with the vibe that they have created. A mixture of vintage and modern furnishings gives it that contemporary European street cafe feel... Which we LOVE!! There is an inside non-smoking area and an outside smoking area, so they have catered for both types of customer that one would find in the Capital city.
Then there's the menu.... There is not much one can say about what they have to offer... Except it's AMAAAZING!! They have everything from breakfasts through to lunch and even finger snacks for the not so ravenous customer. From what we have tasted throughout the week, we have yet to find a single thing that does not satisfy our taste buds! For instance, today if you order a cheese platter, you get yourself a free glass of wine!! What a DEAL!! Also, be sure to check in daily for the "Sandwich of the Day"..And what's more is the coffee!! You HAVE to try the coffee... It will blow your FRIKKIN mind!!
The bistro is open from 7:30 till 16:00 Monday to Friday, and from 9:00 till 15:00 on a Saturday. We have found, obviously from traveling experience, that the best way one should drive to get there, would be to go down Duncan Street, now 'fondly' known as Jan Shoba (don't ask),  and turn into Church street, or as the government calls it " Stanza Mobapa", and then take the second street on your left which should be Hilda. There's enough parking and the odd tree for some sweet shade!
Honey Badger Bistro is just what P-Town needed, a place for good food that can be shared in good company with a pretty sweet vibe! Be sure to join their Facebook page to stay up to date with all things new at the bistro!

'n-Jas-wat-netjies-pas

Our good friend Juan Venter has started up a great initiative with the help of 3rd Place. For those of you who don't know who or what 3rd Place is, Juan describes them as a non-profit organization spreading the love of God in a broken world. For more info about them, check out there Facebook page!! Below is a piece explaining what Juan has started:
" 'n-jas-wat-netjies-pas is an initiative to help the less fortunate this winter. While we snuggle up in our warm houses and beds this winter, there are people that will have to sleep on the street, with nothing more than cardboard to keep them warm. 'n-jas-wat netjies-pas project entails the following:
The coats are purchased by n-jas-wat-netjies-pas for R45 each and the windbreakers for R25 each. The coats are then sold to the public for R80 each and the windbreakers for R60 each. Once you have purchased a coat or windbreaker, you then have the option to give what you have purchased to someone who really needs it this winter (There might be suffering in your immediate surrounding). The R35 profit per coat or windbreaker will be given to 3rd place, to distribute or use as they see fit. The objective of this project is not profit, nor is it personal gain. The purpose of this project is to become personally involved in helping the less fortunate. The coats and windbreakers will be available at the 3rd Place space as of Sunday evening the 29th of April. Sunday evening teachings at 3rd-Place are at 17:00 and 18:30. You are more than welcome to contact me in the week if you want to buy a coat. "

If you want to become a part of this project join the Facebook group or follow Juan on twitter.

Frikkie Cool Creatives: Andrew Wright

Well its that time again... Time for another Frikkie Cool Creative... And today we shall not disappoint!! Today's creative is another P-Town local, but who now resides in another land... Far far away in Toronto, Canada, the land of snow and ice hockey, one can find the incredibly talented and most Rock n' Roll guy that you will ever meet!!! The guy I'm referring to is none other than Andrew Wright! Andrew grew up in Pretoria and studied at the University of Pretoria where he obtained a degree in Graphic Design (now commonly known as Information Design). Not only is Andy a talented artist, but he is also very well known for his talents in the music department... Some of you who are old enough to remember back to the good old days of the Nile Crocodile, might remember the MASSIVE Ska/Punk band, Leek and The Bouncing Uptones. This is just one of Andy's many great bands that he has started. During the time of Leek, Andy ran Croakroom records who were at that stage the biggest record label for the ska/punk scene, helping getting bands such as Fuzigish on the map with releases and promotion etc...

In the early days, he did his fair share of work for the smaller design agencies in and around Pretoria, but he really started to find his roots when he founded Breath of Fresh Air (BOFA) with a mate of his, Mark Hinch. BOFA ran along for a couple of years before Mark moved over to the UK and Andy started working for KFD/Revolution skateboards in Joy-Hannesburg. It was around this time that Andy founded another legendary band, The Slashdogs. The Slashdogs were a mean-ass rock-n-roll band that kicked some serious ass!! They were around for a couple of years before going about there own ways... Unfortunately! Soon after this though, he begun work for Iron Fist Clothing, which ended up leading him out of the country and to greener pastures! But whilst still in the land of the boerewors and beer, Andy started up yet ANOTHER band, although this time way more of a chilled vibe compared to The Slashdogs, in the form of the rockabilly band, Reverend Wright and The Mystery Train Gamblers.

Before long, Andy started work for Iron Fist clothing in San Diego, California, where he worked and lived for just over a year before making his final move to date, to the city of Toronto, Canada, where he currently lives with his wife Jen. After his move to Toronto, Andy revived BOFA, spiced up his website and began taking on new clients. Aaaaaand this is where we sit today... An extremely talented export from the city of the Snor, making a name for himself out there in the big world!!!
